Triumph of Saint Raphael

Location:
The Triumph of San Rafael is located next to the Puerta del Puente (Bridge Gate), in a raised and enclosed square adjoining the Seminary of San Pelagio.

Origin:
In this spot, mid-17th century, the sculpture of Saint Raphael´s Triumph was erected. According to legend, on several occasions the Archangel appeared to various monks to announce the end of the plague epidemic that was ravaging the city. The announcement was fulfilled and gave rise to a strong popular clamour that ended up making him the custodian of Cordoba.

Use:
This sculpture became the main symbol of recognition and devotion to the custodian of the people of Cordoba, Saint Raphael, and from that moment onwards its statues multiplied throughout the length and breadth of the city.
The square in which the monument stands is used for various local festivals and celebrations, such as the Cruces de Mayo.
