Synagogue

Location:
In the western part of Cordoba´s historic centre, just 400 metres from the Mosque-Cathedral, is the intriguing Calle Judíos, a street whose name indicates the presence of this community in the city. It is precisely in this street where the Synagogue of Cordoba is located.

Origin
According to the inscriptions found in the temple, the Synagogue of Cordoba was built between 1314 and 1315 and remained active until the end of the 14th century, when the expulsion of the Jewish community was ordered by the Catholic Monarchs, affecting the whole of Spain.
At the end of the 16th century, the former synagogue became a hermitage dedicated to Christian worship under the patronage of San Crispín. It was not until the end of the 19th century that the monumental value of this building was discovered, leading to its declaration as a National Monument. A few years later, a series of restorations began which have given it its current appearance.
