Pero Mato Street

Location:
Bordering the Archaeological Museum of Cordoba and the College of Santa Victoria is a narrow street known as Cuesta de Pero Mato. This narrow street runs along the old steps of the Roman Temple, the remains of which are housed in the city’s Archaeological Museum.

Origin:
When the Roman Theatre of Cordoba was built towards the end of the 1st century B.C. or beginning of the 1st century A.D., a series of staggered terraces were built in an attempt to overcome the steep slope between the Altos de Santa Ana and the Plaza de Jerónimo Páez. The Cuesta de Pero Mato is a clear example of the urban fossilisation of this system of terraces.
