Martos Mill
Location:
The Martos Mill is located in the bend formed by the Guadalquivir as it enters the historic centre of Cordoba, at the eastern end of the Paseo de la Ribera, close to the Hermitage of the Holy Martyrs.
Origin:
It dates back to the 13th century, but its hydraulic system was modified in the 16th century, changing from the traditional lateral drive of the mill to one that directed the water flow underneath.
Use:
It was originally a mill for drawing water, but over the centuries it was also used for grinding and as a weaving mill. Although its activity ceased in the 18th century, during the first half of the 20th century it was still used as an access point to cross the river by boat. Bathers used this bend in the river as a small urban beach. Between 2001 and 2006 it was restored and converted into the Water Museum, which shows how water has been used throughout history as a resource and technology for various industrial activities, as well as a means of transport.
