Handkerchief Street
Location:
In the vicinity of the Santa Catalina Gate, located next to the eastern wall of Cordoba´s Mosque-Cathedral, there is a small square known as Plaza de la Concha. Precisely, one of the streets that starts from this square is Calle de Pedro Jiménez, traditionally known as Calleja del Pañuelo.
Origin:
Although the origin of this street is uncertain, the first appearance of the Calleja del Pañuelo in historical sources occurs during the 17th century, but with the name Calleja de los Rincones de Oro (Street of the Golden Corners). Society during this time coined this term due to the lack of cleanliness with which this street was characterised. During the following century, it was renamed Calle Pedro Jiménez. Later, with the arrival of the 1950s, mayor Antonio Cruz Conde focused his efforts on the recovery of the city´s historic corners such as Calleja del Pañuelo.
