Arabic Baths
Location:
The current Plaza de los Mártires is located just a few metres from the Alcázar de los Reyes Cristianos. It contains a multitude of artistic and architectural elements, but one of the most outstanding is without a doubt the bathing facilities that would have belonged to the Islamic Alcazar.
Origin:
The Alcazar’s Arab Baths were commissioned by al-Hakam II during the second half of the 10th century. After the fall of Cordoba’s Caliphate the baths remained active, although they underwent many alterations during the Almoravid (1086 – 1147) and Almohad (1147 – 1213) periods. It was not until the beginning of the 14th century that these Arab Baths left behind their original function, being buried in order to create a large esplanade that would allow the construction of the new Christian Alcazar.
