Portillo Arch

Location:
Located in the eastern sector of Cordoba´s historic centre, the entire Calle San Fernando contains a large part of the historic city wall. This wall runs from the corner of the Cruz de Rastro to the end of Calle Alfaros, being divided in the area of the current Town Hall, due to the location of the old Roman Temple.

Origin:
After the civil wars between Caesar and the sons of Pompey, the southern section of the Republican wall was demolished, allowing the city to be extended as far as the Guadalquivir River. The stretch of wall that can be seen at many points along Calle San Fernando therefore dates from the Augustan period. However, it has undergone many alterations over the centuries, with openings and closings of certain parts, as well as additions in the form of houses and other types of structures, which give it its current appearance.
