3rd – 1st Centuries B.C.
First Settlement
The city´s origin dates back to the first Turdetan settlement, stemming from the former Tartessian culture.
New Roman Corduba
The first Roman troops saw Corduba as a strategic location and established a military camp on the other side of the river, opposite the Turdetan village. They eventually founded the new Roman Corduba.
1st century B.C. – 5th century A.D.
Patricia Colony under the Imperial Rome
After the destruction of Corduba, decades later the Emperor Augustus had it rebuilt to make it the capital of Baetica and to give it the greatest splendour of all the Roman cities in Hispania.

The final centuries of the Roman Empire changed the face of the city under Christian influence and the decline of Rome.
6th – 7th centuries

Visigothic Period
Taking advantage of the weakness of the Roman Empire, from the 5th century onwards, the Northern tribes (Suebi, Vandals and Alans) began to arrive in Hispania and with them the looting and destruction of many cities, foreseeably including Corduba.
8th – 12th centuries

Arrival of Islam. Emirate
The struggles between the different Visigothic factions led one of them to ask for help from the Muslims on the other side of the Strait. They found a rich land to conquer.

Civil war (fitna) and the Taifa kingdoms
After the death of Almanzor, the struggles of different factions in the political and religious spheres came to Al-Andalus. Civil war came to put an end to the Umayyad splendour.

13th-15th centuries
Christian Conquest
In 1236, Cordoba is conquered by the Christians under Ferdinand III. The city adapts to a new period and religion that influences all aspects of life in the city.

Renaissance Cordoba
Immersed in the final phase of the Reconquest, the Catholic Monarchs took up residence for long periods of time in Cordoba’s Alcázar. From there they would direct the campaign against the last Nasrid stronghold in Granada. Philip II would also reside in the Alcázar and leave his mark on the city.

Baroque Cordoba
The Church holds economic power and becomes the driving force behind the design and construction of the new city, based on a profoundly religious model.

Cordoba at the dawn of the Age of Enlightenment
With the territorial division of Spain during the reign of Isabel II, Cordoba is designated provincial capital. From this point onwards, the great modernisation of the city begins, laying the foundations and infrastructures on which the contemporary Cordoba we enjoy today would be built.
